Join us for an exciting journey on the
world’s most famous river. The Amazon Basin is the
most ecologically diverse region on earth, home to 20 percent of the world’s
birds, 20 percent of all plants, 10 percent of mammals and thousands of
undiscovered species. This unique cruise along the Amazon River is the
true nature lover’s dream.
Travelling deep into the Amazon
is a feast for the senses not easily experienced anywhere else on earth.
Waking to the boisterous roar of a gang of red howler monkeys high in
the rainforest canopy, spotting a pair of brilliantly colored scarlet
macaw darting through the treetops, stealthily seeking the piercing orange
eyes of black caiman on an after-dark Zodiac excursion, or catching a
glimpse of the Amazon’s endemic Pink Boto River Dolphin —
these are all memories you will carry with you long after disembarking.
As well as its diverse flora and fauna, the Amazon is also home to a wide
variety of interesting native groups and cultures. During our voyage we’ll
have the opportunity to meet and interact with a number of different tribes
and communities that call the shores of the Amazon home.
Much of the Amazon is still unexplored
to this day. Explorer’s small size and shallow draft
make her ideal for river travel. Guided by our indigenous pilot guide,
with our fleet of sturdy Zodiacs and in the company of our expert
crew, we’ll travel up remote and little travelled
tributaries in search of the area’s profuse wildlife and many indigenous
inhabitants.
Day 1 Manaus
Depart Manaus in the evening aboard the MS
Explorer.
Day 2-6 Upper Amazon
The Rio Badajos lends itself to Zodiac shore excursions and cruises. It
is an excellent natural area for Amazonian flora and fauna including bird-watching.
We hope to visit typical Brazilian Amazon villages like Boca do Cuxui
Muni as we travel ever deeper into the Brazilian Amazon. Highlights of
this leg include Parana do Carajai, Rio Urutubinha, and Lago Sao Paulo.
Characterized by its abundance of exotic wildlife, deep tropical rainforest
and vast array of indigenous people, the Upper Amazon is an unforgettable
experience.
Day 7-9 Peruvian Amazon
We travel briefly through Colombia stopping at Leticia, before crossing
into Peru. Leticia is Colombia's largest community east of the Andes with
around 30,000 inhabitants. Other stops include Lago Cahocuma, San Pablo,
Quebrada Shishita, and the oldest established European settlement on the
Amazon, the village of Pevas and its "La Casa del Artista".
Day 10 Iquitos
Disembark early in the morning. Note: Amazon Heartland also runs in the
reverse direction from Iquitos to Manaus. Please refer to code XCI.
More About The MS
Explorer
It's said that the call of the sea is strong. We couldn't
agree more! And what better way for the adventurous traveller to explore
the world's hidden corners than aboard the superb purpose-built Explorer.
Dubbed "The Little Red Ship", Explorer was specifically designed
for the rigours of expedition cruising as well as the safety, comfort
and convenience of her passengers. She was the first (and we still feel
the best!) expedition ship ever constructed, not a converted freighter
or research vessel. Her compact size, shallow draft and ice strengthened
double hull were specifically designed for challenging marine environments
and exploratory travel, while her cabins and common areas were conceived
for passenger comfort and enjoyment. Small, agile and stalwart, she is
a go-anywhere ship for the go-anywhere traveller! Aboard Explorer, you
will enjoy responsible, environmentally and culturally sensitive journeys
under the tutelage of seasoned experts and lecturers, and in the company
of like-minded travellers.
Become Part of History
The travel market is awash with shipboard travel options,
but none compare to the experience of a journey aboard what polar adventurer
Sir Wally Herbert called "the explorer's Explorer". Built under
the direction of visionary Lars-Eric Lindblad, she was the world's first
expedition ship - specifically designed to take adventurous travellers
to remote polar destinations previously available to only very well heeled
explorers and research scientists. And she's never looked back! Explorer,
her skilled expedition minded crew and her enthusiastic passengers had,
in no time, racked up an impressive list of firsts, particularly on the
"Great White Continent". Explorer was the first passenger ship
to travel to Antarctica, and the first south of the Antarctic Circle.
Explorer was also the first passenger ship to make the journey through
the Northwest Passage, the infamous, ice-covered Arctic waters connecting
the Pacific and Atlantic. She has blazed a marine trail around the globe,
earning accolades from passengers, ship enthusiasts and professionals
alike - most recently from National Geographic Adventure magazine, which
ranked our Antarctica adventures among their Top 25 Adventures of the
Year. We hope that you can join us aboard Explorer - and become part of
expedition history!
"The most travelled vessel with the most varied record of natural
wonders anywhere on the high seas." - Keith Shackleton -
Remarkable Journeys in Fine Company
Explorer voyages are expeditions in the truest sense of
the word - rugged and spontaneous. Each day brings new adventure, and
you'll embrace it in the company of an exceptionally competent crew and
shipboard staff of marine and avian biologists, geologists, anthropologists
and historians. They represent a depth of knowledge and experience that
will enrich your travels in unforgettable ways - with fascinating lectures
and exhilarating shore excursions - as well as their good company! While
itineraries are well planned, we always seize opportunities for adventure
before they pass - anything from interrupting dinner to watch a pod of
breaching whales accompanying the ship, or jumping aboard Explorer's fleet
of Zodiacs for a bracing shore-bound ride. The nature of expedition travel
sometimes means altering our schedules due to changing weather conditions,
but whatever the situation, our seasoned crew and experts have the skill
and experience to optimize opportunities while ensuring passenger safety.
Life aboard Explorer - it's adventurous and unpredictable!
Outfitted for Adventure
Those who have travelled aboard Explorer know she is not
a glamorous cruise ship but rather something superior to that - an intimate,
comfortable and immensely capable partner in adventure! Our ship was purpose-built
for rugged and safe expedition voyages. At just under 250 feet, she has
a particularly shallow draft and an ice rated double hull which enables
her to forge into marine territories that elude other more cumbersome
ships. Her go-anywhere size also makes her intimate - aboard Explorer
you'll find a remarkable atmosphere of camaraderie! Whether you are on
the topside observation deck with it's 360-degree view, in the cozy Magellan
Theatre or lounge, or paying a visit to the bridge, you will be in fine
and interesting company.
