This trip will take you cycling through the
beautiful landscapes of western Cuba’s Guaniguanico and El Rosario
mountain ranges. You will have the opportunity to interact with the local
people, and experience first hand the lives of the Cubans. Most Cubans
are very friendly and love to talk to you. A visit to old Havana will
introduce you to one of the most beautiful and vibrant cities in the Caribbean.
Day 1 Arrive Havana (D)
Day 2 Pinar del Río / Viñales
(B,L,D)
A short journey west brings us to Pinar del Río, the “Garden
Province” of Cuba. Enjoy a city tour, with a visit to the must-see
tobacco factory, as well as the local rum distillery. We spend the afternoon
cycling around the pincushion hills of Viñales, a beautiful small
town perfect for a variety of outdoor activities. Return to our campsite
for dinner, and enjoy some of that rum from the distillery.
Day 3 Cayo Jutías (B,L,D)
Cycle to Cayo Jutías, on the North coast, a virtually unspoiled
beach 62km from Viñales. Take in the breathtaking scenery, as we
cycle past dramatic mountain vistas, stopping en route for a picnic lunch.
This coastal route ends at a beautiful white beach with crystal blue water.
Day 4 La Palma (B,L,D)
Today we cycle over Jagua Vieja road to La Palma. Enjoy typical Cuban
cuisine for lunch. This afternoon we make our way back to Valle de Ancón.
Transfer to our hotel for dinner.
Day 5 Cueva de los Portales / Soroa (B,L,D)
Today we transfer to Cueva de los Portales, where Che Guevara commanded
Cuba’s occidental army during the 1962 Cuban Missile Crisis. We
will stop en route for a picnic lunch, and then continue cycling over
Carretera Central to Soroa. Soroa is known as the “Rainbow of Cuba,”
because of its heavy rainfall and resulting rainbows. This region is endowed
with rivers, clear water, and tall trees, and features Cuba’s most
complete orchid garden. We will transfer to our hotel in Soroa to enjoy
the night and eat dinner.
Day 6 Las Terrazas (B,L,D)
Cycle to Las Terrazas, where Cuba’s first UNESCO sanctioned biosphere
reserve is located, and visit the 19th century ruins of coffee plantations
and houses. Enjoy a picnic lunch surrounded by majestic mountains and
beautiful scenery. Transfer to our hotel for a traditional Cuban Creole
meal of traditional chicken fricassee, taro roots and congri rice.
Day 7 Havana (B,D)
A short trip east takes us to back to the capital to soak up some city
culture. Enjoy a walking tour of old and modern Havana for a full appreciation
of this vibrant city. Delight in some Cuban cuisine for dinner, and enjoy
one last night on the town with the group.
