West of the Massif Central lies a region of lush valleys dotted with dozens of harmonious little towns and villages. The Dordogne and Vézère rivers meander through this tranquil landscape, irrigating forests that have produced wild mushrooms and rich black truffles for centuries.

We begin in the ancient Vézère Valley, spending four nights at a lovely family-run hotel in the pretty village of Thonac, enjoying fine regional cuisine. Nearby we explore the stunning riverside village of St Leon-sur-Vézère, the historic village of Sergeac and, at La Vermondie, we see the curious leaning tower. Our walk through the prehistoric valley near Castelmerle prepares us for our visit to the cave complex at Lascaux II, where we see the outstanding galleries. Following the GR36 we reach Fanlac, an old Perigord village, where we see traditional pale limestone houses before returning to Thonac for our last night. Mid-week we transfer to Sarlat where we explore the old medieval town before walking south to Vitrac, on the Dordogne River, where our village hotel is noted for its excellent kitchen. A free day allows time to visit nearby La Roque Gageac, or for a relaxing canoe trail along the river, and our final walk takes us up to the celebrated bastide village of Domme. The trip ends in Sarlat.
