Join us for an educational journey to the Celtic
Fringes of France, Ireland & Scotland. Join Bruce Poon Tip
and Matthew Swan for this Western European history cruise.
We will be starting our journey in Portsmouth, England and cruise across
the English Channel landing on the beaches of Normandy, France following
the route taken by the Allied forces on June 6, 1944. Next, we head west
to Brittany, the home of the French Celts, before heading into the Atlantic
hopping from island to island and along the coast of the western edge
of Europe. Explore settlements dating back over 8,000 years, from early
Stone Age peoples to the Picts, Celts, and later the Vikings.
Day 1 Portsmouth
Depart Portsmouth in the evening.
Days 2 & 3 France
After crossing the English Channel you come ashore at Bernieres sur Mer
located on Juno beach, the sight of the D-Day landing of World War II.
You visit the first French house liberated by Canadian troops, the new
Juno Beach Centre at Courseulles sur Mer, the cemetery at Benys and the
amazing Mulberry Harbour at Arromanches before continuing to the cultural
and geographical district of Brittany.
Day 4 Scilly Isles
Next you head out to sea and the English islands of Isles of Scilly consisting
of 150 isles and rocky islets. Dotted by lighthouses its rocky coasts
failed to stop the sinking of a fair number of ships thru the years. Not
to worry though, we have some of the most experienced seamen in the seven
seas to navigate you safely thru even the most torturous waters.
Days 5-8 Ireland
Heading up to the coast of Ireland we enter Cape Clear, the home of Ireland’s
southernmost seabird colony. Once described as “the most beautiful
place on earth,” the Dingle Peninsula is a must see and fortunately
you will have that opportunity on this journey. You continue hopping up
the West coast of Ireland making stops at Aran Isles for the Gaelic folklore
and culture, Clew Bay Westport to uncover the story of legendary pirate
queen Grace O’Malley, and Falcarragh Tory Island to visit a unique
community of 120 Gaelic-speaking spuds.
Days 8-13 Scotland
Continuing north we cross the North Channel stopping on the historical
smugglers hideout of Islay, the gardens of Gigha island, Staffa Lona Tiree
where no less than 62 kings of Scotland are buried including Duncan, Macbeth’s
victim, St. Kilda where the world’s largest gannet colonies and
fulmars nest on the UK’s highest vertical cliffs. Next you head
to Kirkwall which continuous occupation by Vikings, Celts, Picts and stone-age
people make it one of the richest archaeological areas in the UK. Before
ending our journey in Aberdeen we stop off at the Mousa and Fair Isle,
home to one of Britain’s most isolated settlements and houses a
large colony of Puffins.
Day 14 Aberdeen
We pull into Aberdeen port in the early morning for disembarkation.
