Dunedin, Invercargill, Campbell Island, Auckland
Islands, Snares Island, Bluff.
Everybody should experience the wildlife and beauty of a Sub Antarctic
Island at least once in their life. This is the perfect trip; it includes
three of the most outstanding Sub Antarctic Islands in the world, Snares,
Auckland's and Campbell. The natural history includes, among other things,
albatross's, penguins, sea lions and the most amazing floral display,
described by Sir Joseph Hooker in 1842 as "second to none outside
the tropics". The itinerary allows plenty of time ashore. Combined
with our pre or post (or both) New Zealand tours, this is the perfect
"Down under Expedition" for nature enthusiasts.
Day 1 Depart Dunedin
The Spirit of Enderby will be berthed at Port of Otago. Be transferred
to the ship, then enjoy views of the picturesque harbour as we set a course
to Campbell Island.
** For the January 6, 2006 departure, the Spirit of Enderby will be berthed
at the Town Wharf in Port of Bluff. **
Day 2 At Sea
A day at sea to enjoy the rhythms of the Southern Ocean, get acquainted
with your lecturers and fellow travellers, and spend some time on deck
being mesmerized by the sea, and enjoying the company of seabirds like
albatross and petrels.
Day 3 Campbell Island
Morning arrival at Campbell Island, a fantastic island for birding and
an opportunity to get some really good photographs, especially of the
southern royal albatross. We will anchor below the abandoned Meteorological
Station and walk to Col-Lyall Saddle in the presence of plentiful Pleurophyllum
daisies, which grow on the island. From Col Lyall there is a short walk
to the summit ridge from where you can get some spectacular views over
NW Bay or walk to remote Northwest Bay.
Day 4,5 Auckland Islands
Spend time ashore on Enderby Island in Port Ross, a magnificent island
home to the rare hookers sea lion. The gnarled and windswept rata, and
scrubland plateau are also home to royal albatross, bellbirds, red crowned
parakeets, yellow-eyed penguins and friendly tomtits. There is a good
chance that we will see the endemic flightless teal at Derrycastle Reef.
Day 6 Snares Island
We arrive at this nature reserve and use our zodiacs to cruise the rugged
coastline to experience the unique landscape and some great wildlife including
the endemic snares crested penguins. On the cliffs we will see the buller's
albatross, which only nests here and at the Solander Islands.
Day 7 Bluff
After breakfast, we disembark at the Port of Bluff and head to Invercargill
city or the airport.
