Tokyo, Nikko, Hakone National Park, Kamakura.
Thinking about visiting and very different and exotic country? Japan is
an extraordinary land; home of sumo wrestling, geishas, karaoke and onsens!
This enigmatic nation is one of Asia's most fascinating destinations.
Get back to basics to experience all the culture, history and natural
beauty without breaking your budget. From sushi to samurai - experience
all things Japanese.
Day 1-3 Tokyo
From imperial gardens to towering skyscrapers, the sights are endless
in this frenetic city of the 21st Century. Wander the world's largest
fish market, check out a Kabuki performance or simply revel in the excitement
of Tokyo.
Day 4, 5 Nikko
Relax in Nikko town and explore the scenic Chezunji Lake surrounds - one
of Japan's most beautiful areas and home of many World Heritage-listed
buildings. You might like to go hiking or take a soak in the local hot
springs.
Day 6, 7 Hakone
Travel up to Fuji-Hakone-Izu National Park for a chance to view the famous
Mount Fuji. This naturally scenic, mountainous area has some great walks,
including the 800 year old Tokaido Highway. For those who are keen, bathing
in the outdoor onsens is a real highlight for the area. Remember that
no clothes or swimming costumes are allowed in the hot springs - time
to shed those inhibitions!
Day 8 Kamakura
This former capital with a history of over 3000 years was the centre of
Japanese culture around 900 years ago. Kamakura's Buddhist temples and
shrines are a window to Japan's past, while the Grotto walk is not to
be missed.
Day 9 Tokyo
No visit to Tokyo would be complete without experiencing the shopping
mecca of Ginza. Gawk at galleries or eye the electronics in one of the
world's most dynamic cities.
Difficulty Level
Our focus is on contact with local people, getting out into the countryside,
visiting temples and shrines, travelling on interesting modes of transport,
learning ancient traditions, sampling incredible cuisine, staying in local-style
guesthouses and immersing ourselves in everything Asian. Although this
is not a trekking trip as such, it does involve a decent amount of walking
each day as we explore the many sites on foot. Temples and train stations
involve a lot of stair climbing so a general level of fitness is required.
Japan is a very developed country, but is still a fairly new destination
for foreign travellers. We will be travelling in the traditional way so
be prepared for the occasional frustrating situation. The plus-side of
this is that we get to see and experience Japan at its most authentic.
Pack a good sense of humour and leave all inhibitions behind.
