Difficulty Level

We spend a night on a houseboat in the Keralan backwaters and come face to face with the local life in small rural towns, fishing villages and spice plantations. You may need to carry your pack on and off trains and buses, up hotel steps, etc. Your itinerary may include easy paced walks or bike-rides, but these are on mainly flat ground.

Kerala Backwaters, Fort Cochin, Periyar National Park, elephants, traditional houseboat stay, Munnar hill station, beaches, Varkala. Lush, tropical southern India is an inspiration. Amid the green shades of a tropical paradise, encounter locals in their fishing villages, tea gardens, tribal homes and colonial enclaves and join them in their bazaars and boats. This is a fabulous part of India.

Day 1, 2 Cochin
This seaside Indian city has Portuguese and Dutch history, architecture and style. Cochin is home to the famous traditional Kathakali dance which originated in temple worship.

Day 3 Munnar
Breathtaking views of tea country, reminiscent of the Raj, plunge you into a relaxing visit.

Day 4, 5 Periyar
On the water and on land, search for wild elephant herds and other animals.

Day 6 Kumarakom
A paradise on earth, step into Kerala's famed backwaters, described as one of the ten most beautiful places in the world.

Day 7 Houseboat
Cruise in the canals, swim in the waters, watch the sunset through coconut palms, then view a million stars before drifting off to the lull of water slapping on the bow.

Day 8 Allepey
This pleasant market town uses canals and roadways for transport, both fringed by coconut trees. Staying in an ayurvedic retreat, there's time for a bit of pampering.

Day 9, 10 Varkala
Check out clifftop sunsets over the Arabian Sea, stroll along white sandy beaches and indulge in some therapeutic massage and yoga in one of the more undiscovered parts of Kerala.

Day 11, 12 Cochin
Settled over the water and mixed with many past cultures, Cochin is well worth a second look before our journey ends.
